The two big decisions
Push-button or hands-on. Super-automatic machines grind, tamp, brew and often froth milk for you. Semi-automatic machines give you more control and usually better espresso for the money, but you’ll need to learn the routine. Our semi-automatic vs super-automatic guide covers the trade-offs.
The grinder. For semi-automatic machines, a capable espresso grinder matters as much as the machine itself. If you don’t own one, either budget for it (see best grinders for espresso) or pick a machine with a built-in grinder.
